Hazel Wright is an American wood carver from Western Maryland. She began carving ducks over 30 years ago at the Calvert Marine Museum in Solomons, MD with Captain Pepper Langley and his son, Jim.
In 1989, Hazel and her husband retired and moved back to Garrett County, Maryland. Hazel soon had the fortune to join a group under the tutelege of master wood carver, Gary Yoder at the Spruce Forest Artisan Village in Grantsville, Maryland. Gary is a champion wildfowl carver, and Hazel considers him to be a champion person as well.
Hazel’s favorite birds to carve are birds of prey and shore and wading birds. While she enjoys carving itself, the highlight of her year is participating in the Ward World Championship Wildfowl Carving Competition in Ocean City, Maryland during the last full weekend of April.
Hazel started carving later in life. It’s never too late to begin a new hobby!!!
